I Used Claude to Build a Legacy Story Recorder

5 Minutes With Grey Hair Dave
I Used Claude to Build a Legacy Story Recorder

I assert that artificial intelligence is profoundly transformative for content creation and bespoke application development, as demonstrated by my hands-on use of ElevenLabs for voice synthesis, Claude for generative design, and Meta’s Muse. I describe how Claude rapidly prototyped a browser-based Grey Hair Voices legacy recorder that provides structured interview prompts, dual waveforms, chapter markers, live scripting, and the delivery of podcast-ready WAV and MP3 files. I recount that the same generative process produced a CRM-style application for a dog-sitting business within minutes, evidencing AI’s capacity to generate pragmatic, user-oriented solutions tailored to specific workflows. I explain that I intend to incorporate these tools to streamline my social media posting, editing workflows in Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro, and the production of legacy audio services while continuing to validate audio fidelity and browser compatibility. I invite listeners to contact me for assistance with podcasting or editing, to help others discover podcasts, and I offer a sincere apology to veterans for a prior insensitive remark. I remain impressed by these developments and will continue to explore AI capabilities in greater depth. I describe a methodical exploration of contemporary generative audio technologies and their pragmatic incorporation into a modest production workflow. I recount my direct experiments with ElevenLabs for voice rendering and with Claude for ideation and prototyping, and I delineate how those tools informed my judgement concerning the relative merits of bespoke solutions versus established professional software such as Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro. I observed that while universal replacements for mature audio suites remain elusive, it is possible to design narrowly focused recording systems that outperform general-purpose tools for particular tasks; consequently, I commissioned a conceptual design for "Grey Hair Voices — Legacy Story Recorder." The design includes researcher-oriented metadata fields (storyteller identity, session context, interviewer, geolocation, date), dual waveform displays, marker-driven navigation, templated question banks across thematic tabs (early years, growing up, love and family, work and service, places and times, wisdom and legacy), and seamless export to both family-ready MP3 and mastered WAV delivered to podcast loudness standards at −16 LUFS. I emphasize that a browser-hosted architecture optimizes portability and fault tolerance for mobile capture, and I report satisfactory preliminary tests using an iPad microphone, while acknowledging that iterative refinement and further validation will be required before institutionalizing the workflow.

Takeaways:

  • I experimented with Muse and weighed how much of my personal data I was willing to share.
  • I used ElevenLabs to generate an intro voice and found the tool simple and effective.
  • I asked Claude to design a browser based legacy story recorder and it produced a detailed prototype quickly.
  • I tested Claude and it proposed an app for legacy recordings with chapter markers, question templates, and mastered files.
  • I also had Claude create a simple CRM app for a dog sitting business that captured key client and pet details.

Speaker A

Welcome to five Minutes with Grey Hair Dave.

Speaker A

He has gray hair and he has a gray beard and he also wears glasses like the guy in the artwork.

Speaker A

Oh, and the guy in the artwork is better looking now, tariff free.

Speaker A

Here is Gray Hair Dave.

Speaker B

Yes indeed, folks.

Speaker B

Yes, indeed.

Speaker B

I should probably change the voice on there, but that was elevenlabs IO.

Speaker B

They do all kinds of cool things now.

Speaker B

I use it for the intro and I just typed in what I wanted it to say.

Speaker B

I gave it a script and then I just chose the voice and you can kind of choose the tone, you know, chose choose the tone.

Speaker B

You could have it.

Speaker B

Also clone your own voice and do your own reading.

Speaker B

Check it out at the the link in the show notes.

Speaker B

That's elevenlabs IO.

Speaker B

So here we are.

Speaker B

It's another day in paradise here in Florida.

Speaker B

The weather finally broke last weekend.

Speaker B

It has been so gorgeous here now where the humidity is down, it's not raining every day.

Speaker B

It's also not in the 90s.

Speaker B

Feeling like it's in the hundreds and you're standing there, just standing outside, sweating, not doing anything.

Speaker B

It's a much better, better day.

Speaker B

How are you doing?

Speaker B

I hope you're.

Speaker B

I hope you're really doing well.

Speaker B

It's been an interesting week.

Speaker B

Since we talked last week, I told you I was going to look into Muse or Muse M U S E by Meta.

Speaker B

I said, well, how much of your information or how much more of your information do you want them to have?

Speaker B

And I thought about that for a couple of days and I said, well, okay.

Speaker B

And I told you I was going to check it out.

Speaker B

And I did.

Speaker B

And I asked it to look at a couple of things on my Facebook page, came back with some suggestions.

Speaker B

And then I said, this, basically this isn't the exact wording I used, but because I don't have it up in front of me, I said, I want to start posting to social media on a regular basis for my new division of Gray Hair Productions, which is called Gray Hair Voices.

Speaker B

I said, I want it to be on a regular basis.

Speaker B

I don't want it to be gaudy, but I want it to be fun.

Speaker B

And what can you do to help me with this?

Speaker B

Or can you help me with this?

Speaker B

What thoughts?

Speaker B

For a couple minutes, obviously it had gone into all of my Facebook pages and all of my Instagram pages and it came back with a list of things I should do before getting into it.

Speaker B

And I was impressed.

Speaker B

I mean, also reminded me.

Speaker B

I mean, the list it gave me, gave me Facebook pages.

Speaker B

I forgot that I had Because I pretty much stay on one or two pages in my Facebook, in my Facebook, you know, program.

Speaker B

So that gave me a list of things to do which makes sense to do what it said to do.

Speaker B

So I'm going to do that and then go back at it.

Speaker B

And it gave me this list of instructions that was very, very well thought out, very well written.

Speaker B

And I'm going to continue on and see what happens.

Speaker B

I think it's going to be a good thing for me.

Speaker B

Again, I listened to somebody who I trust on a, on a interview.

Speaker B

His name is Adam Curry.

Speaker B

Now he was, he is called the Pod Father because he and Steve Jobs and basically him came up with podcasting with the idea and got it started and got it going through Apple and he's been doing it since, oh, early 2000s.

Speaker B

He also used to be a, an MTV video jockey.

Speaker B

And he's, he's intelligent, he's smart and I, I, I, I trust what he says 99 of the time.

Speaker B

Do we agree on everything?

Speaker B

No, but he had an interesting interview the this Week in Podcasting.

Speaker B

It's a show that runs every week, but it was really, really good.

Speaker B

And we, he talked about the fact that he liked it.

Speaker B

So I thought, well, okay, maybe I'll, I'll give it a little more look.

Speaker B

And I did and I was very impressed.

Speaker B

So I'm going to continue on after I get done editing this today.

Speaker B

I'm going to continue on and go in and do some of the edits it wanted me to do in my Facebook pages and then get started.

Speaker B

And then, and this started a little before that.

Speaker B

In fact, it was just yesterday I, I went and I had this idea listening to another podcast about SaaS and SAS.

Speaker B

If you're not sure what that means is software as a service and is it going to be around long?

Speaker B

I, I, I thought about that for a while because they were talking about how you can make anything you want now with AI.

Speaker B

So I set a reminder in my, my phone to see what AI could do about replacing or enhancing my Logic Pro and my Final Cut Pro for editing.

Speaker B

And it came back with a couple of answers that it could, but it would be better to, to not because it's a pretty good program already.

Speaker B

And it did say though, because I told it that I was doing legacy recording and it said, you know, on your regular podcasting, it may not make sense to change these things after looking at your podcast, your, most of your podcasts are only, you know, 15 to 30 minutes.

Speaker B

I said, that makes sense.

Speaker B

And I said, but for your legacy recording, I might be able to do something for you.

Speaker B

Now this, remember, this is Claude and this is in Claude co work.

Speaker B

I'm not using Claude code yet.

Speaker B

And on Claude I am using Opus 5.5 medium.

Speaker B

Just so you know, I'm using the regular, the regular one.

Speaker B

So it came, it said to me, what do you want to do again?

Speaker B

So I said, well, let's.

Speaker B

I want it to be, you know, I'm going to be doing legacy stories for folks to leave for their, you know, children or grandchildren or great grandchildren, all those types of things.

Speaker B

Could you build me a recorder, you know, or a recording device or app that would help me with this and you know, so I can ask the questions or somebody else, an interviewer can ask the questions.

Speaker B

And, and it took me not.

Speaker B

And granted there were more and more prompts I gave it.

Speaker B

So you know, but here's the very first prompt I gave and I wanted you to think, to listen, to think about this, think about seeing if you can make a better program for recording audio for either podcasting or legacy stories than Apple Logic Pro Short answer, I can't build a better Logic Pro, but I can build something better than Logic Pro for your specific job.

Speaker B

It came back with all kinds of great things and asked me if I'd like to build it.

Speaker B

And it did actually say it took about five minutes.

Speaker B

Now, in that five minutes, what it come back with is gray hair voices.

Speaker B

Legacy story recorder.

Speaker B

On the very first line or header tab, it says who's the storyteller?

Speaker B

What session is this?

Speaker B

Who's the interviewer?

Speaker B

Where are you located?

Speaker B

Because it knows I go to communities.

Speaker B

And what's the date?

Speaker B

The next thing down is microphones.

Speaker B

So you turn microphones on, it gives you a button.

Speaker B

It's already got waveforms, one for the storyteller, one for the interviewer.

Speaker B

And it's got a record button, a finish button, and a mark button.

Speaker B

And markers are very good.

Speaker B

I use markers a lot.

Speaker B

And so then it asks you what you can turn your microphones on.

Speaker B

What microphone is the storyteller using?

Speaker B

What microphone is the, the interviewee, you know, using or the interviewer using?

Speaker B

And it gives you a session and it gives you the waveform as it's recording.

Speaker B

It also gives you choices for questions.

Speaker B

So let's just say that I want to ask about the early years and I come back with where and when were you born?

Speaker B

Where was a house that you grew up in?

Speaker B

What did your parents do for a living?

Speaker B

What games did you play as a child?

Speaker B

And If I went over to it's got six tabs, early years, growing up, love and family, work and service, places and times, wisdom and legacy.

Speaker B

And I just now went over to places and times.

Speaker B

What world, what world event do you remember most clearly?

Speaker B

What trip do you remember most?

Speaker B

These are the questions it's asking.

Speaker B

You can give it chapter markers, you can make a live script with it and it'll save it for you.

Speaker B

And you can either edit it there, which is not the best yet.

Speaker B

I can add a few things to edit but or send it over to Logic to edit it.

Speaker B

But you can keep going back to it and back to it and back to it.

Speaker B

So let's say you don't do it all in one fell swoop, right?

Speaker B

You say, okay, let's do this.

Speaker B

We'll do this for half an hour and then we'll come back in a week, we'll do some more and then on and on and on, however long it takes.

Speaker B

Found that to be amazing.

Speaker B

I only had one or two quick edits and they were very, very small.

Speaker B

And it came back and it just blew me away.

Speaker B

It delivers the finished files as a family MP3 and a mastered wave clean of low rumble leveled to podcast loudness standards at negative 16 luffs it it's doing all this for me, but it suggests I run it on Chrome, which is not bad.

Speaker B

It, it is a web based product so it's going to run on a, a, a browser.

Speaker B

But I tried it yesterday on my I, on my iPad and I just use my iPad's microphone to do a test and I want to do four or five more tests before I start really going into it.

Speaker B

The sound quality was good just off the iPad, speakerphones or speakers.

Speaker B

It blew me away folks.

Speaker B

It blew me away.

Speaker B

Next after that I was talking to a friend and she has a dog sitting business.

Speaker B

And I went to Claude again and I said, hey, I'd like to help my friend with her business so she can keep track of, of your clients, her dogs.

Speaker B

So I said to Claude, let's see, please create an app for my friend's dog sitting business called Blank.

Speaker B

It needs to have the following items that she can fill in dog's name, how many parents, how many parents, parents, names, phone numbers, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, dog types, you know, all that kind of stuff.

Speaker B

And I also, it also needs to add rabies shots so, and all those kinds of fun things.

Speaker B

And, and within five minutes again it came back with it's basically a CRM for her that she can use on her phone.

Speaker B

She does everything on her phone.

Speaker B

Came back with first tab is, you know, dog's name, type of.

Speaker B

Type of dog.

Speaker B

I didn't even ask it to do that.

Speaker B

When was the rabies shot?

Speaker B

When.

Speaker B

When were these other shops that.

Speaker B

Shots that she wasn't even thinking about.

Speaker B

Is the dog socialized, you know, with strangers, with kids, with cats, any medicines, parents name, phone number, zip code, door codes, all that kind of stuff.

Speaker B

She also does in home services where she'll go walk your dogs or whatever.

Speaker B

And it offers other things.

Speaker B

And the next one is the rate quotes that she quoted the person for overnight stays and days and past stays add ons and extra charges.

Speaker B

So.

Speaker B

And then it's got one for notes.

Speaker B

Simple and easy.

Speaker B

And it takes.

Speaker B

Took such little time that I am blown away by these processes.

Speaker B

Really makes me want to dig in and go deeper into this.

Speaker B

I want to do some editing on mine and I've got to make it so she.

Speaker B

Because I downloaded her app on my iPad and it works great.

Speaker B

It, it's.

Speaker B

It's an app.

Speaker B

It's.

Speaker B

It's now the one for me, you know, Gray Hair Voices Recorder.

Speaker B

They suggest it's not an app.

Speaker B

They suggested that it was or it suggested that it would be a browser based app, which makes more sense because what happens if I'm out and about and my bad, my laptop runs out of battery, you know, or whatever, grab my iPad, go right back to it.

Speaker B

It's.

Speaker B

It works for me.

Speaker B

I don't know that I want to make it an app, you know, but I'm not trying to sell these and I'm not trying to sell these to you.

Speaker B

I'm just trying to tell you AI is out there and the things it can do is really boggling my mind.

Speaker B

I am loving it, absolutely loving it.

Speaker B

So you want to start a podcast?

Speaker B

Do you want to leave a legacy?

Speaker B

Contact me atgray hair productions.com that's G R E way G R E way G R e y hair productions.com I do that a lot.

Speaker B

It's early in the morning, folks.

Speaker B

So, you know, it's.

Speaker B

Maybe I'm not quite awake.

Speaker B

Let me know.

Speaker B

I can help you.

Speaker B

I can help you get started.

Speaker B

I can give you advice.

Speaker B

And if you want me to do some of your editing either on audio or video, I'd be glad to help.

Speaker B

Also folks, you know somebody out there who doesn't know what a podcast is, do me a favor, take them by the hand, grab their phone, show them where the podcast app is, whether that's podcasts on Apple Phone or whatever.

Speaker B

The other one is in Android and which I think is there's a podcast app over there.

Speaker B

So many of the other apps I use, Fountain also show them how to use it.

Speaker B

Show them the genres.

Speaker B

Use five Minutes of Gray Hair Dave as the example.

Speaker B

Have them follow, show them how to follow, how to subscribe.

Speaker B

I'd appreciate it.

Speaker B

So would all the other podcasters out there.

Speaker B

Also, folks, while you're out and about today, please do you see somebody who looks like they're not having a great day?

Speaker B

Smile, say hi, wave.

Speaker B

You might make their day.

Speaker B

You don't know what's going on.

Speaker B

And when you make their day, it's going to make yours.

Speaker B

So hey, this is Dave saying, I will talk to you again next week after I delve more into AI.

Speaker B

One last thing.

Speaker B

I said last week that I was a veteran citizen and I want to apologize to all the veterans out there.

Speaker B

I thought about it after I published.

Speaker B

I thought, wow, that was pretty insensitive to veterans who have served.

Speaker B

I have never served.

Speaker B

The draft wasn't there when I turned 18.

Speaker B

I have friends who served and apologize for that.

Speaker B

So I am no longer a veteran citizen.

Speaker B

I am just a seniored citizen or a well used citizen.

Speaker B

Let's go with that.

Speaker B

Okay, so again, to all my veterans who are my friends who are veterans or anybody out there, if I offended you, please please accept my apologies.

Speaker B

That was not how it was meant.

Speaker B

So Gray Hair Dave's here saying, I will talk to you next week and you have a great, great week and great weekend.

Speaker A

Bye.

Speaker B

Bye.
