I Lost My Voice and Found My Focus: Returning to Weekly Episodes

I Lost My Voice and Found My Focus: Returning to Weekly Episodes

I am back after a month off. I am returning to weekly shows. I talk about using AI tools like ElevenLabs and ChatGPT and how I use them as assistants. I explain that I took time off, caught the flu, and had to rebuild my podcasting muscles. I offer help to anyone who wants to start a podcast and point them to my website and book. I thank you for listening and I will talk to you again next week. I returned after a month away and I explain why I was absent and how I came back. I took time off deliberately, but I did not accomplish everything I planned. I spent the first week resting, listening to other podcasts, and seeing friends. Then I resumed work only briefly before illness sidelined me for several days. The cough lingered, and it affected my voice and focus. I describe how that interruption made me forget routine actions like how I begin recording. I emphasize the need to retrain one’s podcasting muscles after a break. I recommend using a simple outline to guide a show, even if the outline is only two or three points. I tell listeners that the muscles return with regular practice, and that I intend to resume a weekly schedule. I acknowledge my voice is not yet fully recovered, but I record now to keep momentum. I close with gratitude to listeners and a promise to continue producing content weekly, while encouraging patience and steady effort as one rebuilds creative habits.

Takeaways:

  • Well I am back and I returned after a month off to rebuild podcasting rhythm.
  • I used ElevenLabs and ChatGPT to create voices and images for my show and promotions.
  • I helped a friend by using AI to make professional images of her dog for social media.
  • I think AI can be powerful for creators like me but it requires care from big companies.
  • I invite people who want to start a podcast to contact me and use my book for guidance.

Speaker A

Welcome to five Minutes with Grey Hair Dave.

Speaker A

He has grey hair and he has a grey beard and he also wears glasses like the guy in the artwork.

Speaker A

Oh, and the guy in the artwork is better looking now, tariff free.

Speaker A

Here is Grey Hair Dave.

Speaker B

Yes, indeed.

Speaker B

Yes, indeed, folks, that was ElevenLabs IO, Eleven Labs.

Speaker B

That IO is the program I use.

Speaker B

It's an AI program where I type in what I want.

Speaker B

I choose the voice.

Speaker B

I want it to be the male, female, or the, you know, the, the ethnicity.

Speaker B

You know, if I want it to be English, Australian, Irish American, I choose all that.

Speaker B

So that's the cool part.

Speaker B

If you're interested in finding out more about it, because there's a whole lot more it can do, go to the.

Speaker B

Go to the show notes and there will be a link in there for 11 labs IO with my affiliate links.

Speaker B

So if you use it, I get a commission and that kind of will help pay for putting on this show.

Speaker B

So how are you?

Speaker B

It's been a month, right?

Speaker B

I said I was going to take a month off.

Speaker B

I said to be back on the 30th.

Speaker B

Here it is September 30th and I'm back now.

Speaker B

Have I done much?

Speaker B

Have I done everything I said I was going to do?

Speaker B

Absolutely not, if you can believe that.

Speaker B

I don't.

Speaker B

I think you will understand.

Speaker B

The first week I took off, I just did nothing.

Speaker B

I listened to some podcasts.

Speaker B

I worked.

Speaker B

I. I did not work on Gray Hair voices at all or five minutes of gray hair dave.com.

Speaker B

I didn't.

Speaker B

I just didn't.

Speaker B

And I went out, saw some friends, a few things like that.

Speaker B

The first week.

Speaker B

The second week I started working on it.

Speaker B

And of course I start working on it on a Tuesday and I got to go back to Disney on Wednesday.

Speaker B

So I didn't get as much done as I wanted.

Speaker B

And then that Saturday I started getting sick and I couldn't get out of bed hardly for four days.

Speaker B

It was, it was a flu.

Speaker B

Don't know how I caught it, but then again, I think I do because I see thousands of people a day at work going by me, all these other kinds of things, getting in, getting out of cabins and stuff like that.

Speaker B

So that's usually what happens.

Speaker B

You catch it from somebody else.

Speaker B

So that put me out for the.

Speaker B

All four days of my days off.

Speaker B

I went back to work thinking I was feeling better, which I was, but the cough just persisted.

Speaker B

And of course, you know, you take cough drops or cough medicine and that kind of stuff.

Speaker B

I keep taking medicine and I was feeling Better.

Speaker B

And then this last weekend, which is last couple of days, I just, I just couldn't, I, I couldn't keep my mind focused on gray hair voices or five minutes of gray hair day.

Speaker B

I was actually considering putting this off another weekend and I got up this morning, said, you know, you feel pretty good.

Speaker B

So here we are, I'm back and we're going to keep on going.

Speaker B

We're going to go back to weekly.

Speaker B

I, I enjoy the weekly part, but I'll be honest with you, when I first started recording today, I had forgotten everything I had been doing.

Speaker B

I forgot what I, the episode I was on.

Speaker B

I forgot how to start recording.

Speaker B

I mean, I knew how to start recording, but the minute I started talking, it just wasn't coming out.

Speaker B

It wasn't coming out.

Speaker B

Right.

Speaker B

And that's something I wanted to talk about.

Speaker B

If you are a podcaster and you do take a break like I just did, and you come back, you've got to re, reinvigorate those muscles, those podcasting muscles to the point where you're going, okay, you click the record button and you start and you know what you're going to do.

Speaker B

I didn't outline this one because I wanted it to be free flowing.

Speaker B

I try to do an outline for all my podcasts just so I have a basic idea of what I want to talk about.

Speaker B

Now that may be only two or three things on a piece of paper or in the app, the notion app, but you know, I try to, and it doesn't always work well and sometimes I deviate and I'll start talking and the next thing you know, I'm off on a tangent and, and, and, and off we go.

Speaker B

You know, we're off to the races on that.

Speaker B

But you know, I'm gonna try and be a little more focused.

Speaker B

I'm feeling the, as, as I'm talking to you now, I'm feeling the, the muscles starting to reinvigorate themselves and rejuvenate and come back.

Speaker B

Now, the voice is not a hundred percent.

Speaker B

It really is not.

Speaker B

And by the end of the day tonight, I go to work, I probably hardly have a voice, but that's okay.

Speaker B

That's why I wanted to get this out today.

Speaker B

So let's talk a little about, a little bit about the things I was wanting to get to today.

Speaker B

First of all, I have been helping a friend with a website that she, for her business and, and she is very good at posting social media about her business.

Speaker B

She's, she does it multiple times a day, which is great.

Speaker B

She has A dog sitting business and she has two of her own dogs, cutest schnauzers that you'll ever see.

Speaker B

They're just gorgeous dogs.

Speaker B

So she'll send pictures of them and this and that.

Speaker B

And a while ago I took one of the dogs and I made a model sheet in OpenAI or, you know, ChatGPT OpenAI and of the dog and I made it in the character type form and that was cool.

Speaker B

And we made a couple of posts with that and a couple of pictures came out of that.

Speaker B

And then she sent me this picture the other day.

Speaker B

He loves to sit on her desk chair or yeah, her desk chair in front of the computer.

Speaker B

And it was just so perfect.

Speaker B

So I went to ChatGPT and I told it what I wanted and I told her that I wanted to put it in a tuxedo with cigar and what I wanted it to say on the, on the coffee mug that was sitting in front of him.

Speaker B

And it came out fantastic.

Speaker B

I also told it I didn't want it in character mode.

Speaker B

I wanted it in photo, as a photo image.

Speaker B

And it took it from a sitting position to a dog laying back in his chair smoking a cigar with his legs crossed in front of the computer was so cool.

Speaker B

And then I, she sent me another one or I took him, I took that same photo and I made another one of him sitting in front of the computer with glasses on, talking about the schedule, you know, because if you're a dog sitter and nowadays are coming up, you gotta, you gotta schedule these things out because her schedule fills up and she has a limit of what she can handle and what she'll take in.

Speaker B

But it came out so cool.

Speaker B

It was just so much fun.

Speaker B

But these are the things that AI keeps coming up with and the advances that they keep coming up with.

Speaker B

And I think it's fantastic because I love AI.

Speaker B

So let's talk about AI and the elephant in the room, as they say.

Speaker B

Now the creators of Chat, GPT and Claude, which is anthropic, came out a couple weeks ago and said that AI could start being dangerous or, you know, or taking over things.

Speaker B

And I didn't read or listen to the whole thing because if you're doing it right, it's not going to hurt you.

Speaker B

And they're talking for the big players, not for you.

Speaker B

And I, I mean, I'm on the $20 a month plan and I can't use it as much as these people who are buying huge amounts of tokens, using it to run their websites and their business.

Speaker B

I, I'M not doing that.

Speaker B

I'm using it as an assistant, not as a business.

Speaker B

Can you?

Speaker B

Yes, you can.

Speaker B

Can you do it for business?

Speaker B

Absolutely.

Speaker B

Can you fold it into your existing framework and, and everything else in workflow in your business?

Speaker B

Absolutely, you can.

Speaker B

The thing is, you got to know if you're going to do it.

Speaker B

If you're not, if you're not, you're not.

Speaker B

If you're gonna, you're gonna.

Speaker B

Then you got to be careful.

Speaker B

That's basically all I'm telling you.

Speaker B

Am I an expert in this?

Speaker B

Absolutely not.

Speaker B

I am not an expert at this.

Speaker B

But I've been playing with it since it came out and playing as was the first year.

Speaker B

Now I'm working with it and I'm using it again as an assistant.

Speaker B

Am I putting virtual assistants out of work?

Speaker B

No, I don't think so.

Speaker B

So I don't know.

Speaker B

I don't know what to say about that anymore.

Speaker B

It's.

Speaker B

It's a.

Speaker B

A big corporation thing that.

Speaker B

That has to worry about it.

Speaker B

Not the little guys like you and I.

Speaker B

If you're a big guy listening to this, I'm happy for you.

Speaker B

Just be careful.

Speaker B

And it's like with everything you've got, everything new, you got to be careful when you first start.

Speaker B

So there's that.

Speaker B

What do you think of that, huh?

Speaker B

I don't know.

Speaker B

Now I know that you want to start a podcast if you don't already have one.

Speaker B

If you have one, that's fantastic.

Speaker B

If you want help with it, let me know.

Speaker B

Go Togray hair productions.com that's G R E Y.

Speaker B

Speaker B

Speaker B

The website and, you know, click on a link to my book.

Speaker B

They can buy my book, and it tells you how to start a podcast.

Speaker B

So there's that.

Speaker B

You gotta.

Speaker B

If there's so many things that people know, so many things that people could talk at length about, so many stories out there that really should be told for.

Speaker B

For prosperity.

Speaker B

Speaker B

For forever.

Speaker B

Podcasting is becoming bigger than radio.

Speaker B

I don't personally know if it's bigger than yet, but I think it is.

Speaker B

That's just my personal opinion and I listen to people who say they know what they're doing.
